What is Type Hype?

Type Hype is the Wanderer’s PDH League’s first meta-mixup event of 2026! The league began at a local game store in Iowa in 2025, and this year marks its first year-long season with online play available through app.cpdh.guide. While the league allows for regular PDH games anytime and anywhere, four special mixup events are running alongside the main season to promote innovation, experimentation, and fun.

Type Hype restricted the commander pool to those bearing a non-creature type — such as Artifact or Enchantment — or a non-legendary supertype, most notably Snow. These types could be in addition to, or instead of, other typings. Notably, last year’s rules changes that introduced Vehicles and Spacecraft as legal commander types also make those commanders eligible for this event.

The 2026 Season Ahead

Type Hype is the first of four mixup events this year. Here’s what’s on the calendar:

June — Rainbow Rumble: Players must bring decks with three or more colors.

September — Triple Threat: Each player brings three decks. Before deck selection, every player may ban one deck from each opponent’s lineup.

December — PDH Commander Clash: Only Pauper commanders that received their first printing in 2026 are eligible.

A Field Full of Innovation

Game day saw a field full of creative and unexpected builds. The standout of the early rounds was [[Moritte of the Frost]], piloted by Dukeslayer — a deck that has since earned its place in the Emerald tier of this year’s league leaderboard. A Snow commander was the last thing I expected to see, and it more than proved its worth. As a changeling carrying all creature types, Moritte can function as literally whatever the deck needs it to be at any given moment.

The combo the deck assembled was impressive: with a [[Wirewood Savage]] on the battlefield, Moritte was flickered repeatedly, triggering the Savage’s beast-based draw ability each time and allowing its pilot to draw through as much of their deck as they needed. Elegant, unexpected, and effective.

The Final Table

The final table saw some familiar faces, as well as two newcomers to the online competitive scene. All four commanders in the finals shared the Artifact type, including one making its competitive debut. In seating order:

Seat 1 — Kevin Levi: Piloting a five-color Voltron build helmed by [[Sphinx of the Guildpact]]. This was his first online tournament.

Seat 2 — Bernie: A well-known face from the Jalapeño Paupers YouTube channel, Bernie attended his first ever PDH tournament with a combo-oriented [[Enthusiastic Mechanaut]] list.

Seat 3 — Cobraman: His tried-and-tested Arabella list, which has proven itself both in and out of tournament play.

Seat 4 — Ginger Persolus: Bringing [[Guidelight Pathmaker]] in its debut appearance at a recorded tournament.

The Final Game

From the opening turns, Arabella quickly began chipping away at life totals with its pings, and never let up. In the midgame, Enthusiastic Mechanaut came within reach of an infinite combo, and it took a coordinated effort from the table to shut it down. All the while, Sphinx of the Guildpact was growing increasingly dangerous — stacking up buffs until it reached the point where any player who couldn’t block it was facing a one-shot death.

Ultimately, it was Ginger who closed out the game. By flickering [[Guidelight Pathmaker]] to assemble his combo pieces, he was able to generate infinite mana, then channel it into repeated activations of [[Secret Door]] — pinging each of his opponents out of the game as he emptied his deck to the [[Lost Mine of Phandelver]].

Ginger credits part of his success to the novelty of the commander. [[Guidelight Pathmaker]] hasn’t seen much competitive play yet, and his opponents simply didn’t know what lines to watch for. In particular, they didn’t anticipate him stacking multiple triggers off his commander to fetch the exact pieces he needed to close the game.

What’s Next

Ginger is thrilled with how [[Guidelight Pathmaker]] performed, and confident the deck has legs beyond a restricted meta. A full pilot’s guide is coming soon to CPDH.guide, where he’ll break down how the deck operates and what makes it tick. Keep an eye out!
